A remote volcano on Russia's central Kuril Islands in the North Pacific Ocean will likely cause delays or cancellations of flights between Vancouver and Asia in coming days, Air Canada is advising.

The airline issued an advisory on Monday morning after the active volcano, known as the Sarychev Peak, started belching ash plumes on June 12, spreading clouds of volcanic material over several hundred kilometres to the northwest and southeast.

Weather conditions could affect the spread of the ash and disrupt flights between Vancouver and Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The impact on Toronto-Asia flights is expected to be minimal, Air Canada said.

Eruptions have been recorded at Sarychev Peak for more than 200 years, ranging from relatively calm lava flows to explosive blasts.
