Paramedics attended to the shooting victim on the scene, who has been airlifted to an area hospital in Surrey. (CBC)A man who was found lying on the side of a highway in Surrey, B.C., Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound has died in hospital.
The man was found on Highway 10, just east of 132nd Street after Surrey RCMP officers responded at about 8:45 a.m. PT to what they thought was a traffic accident. Someone had made a 911 call, reporting a man lying in the road.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the man had been shot. His name has not been released.
"It appears an old man was shot in a nearby home and made his way on foot on to Highway 10, where ultimately he's collapsed," Sgt. Roger Morrow said.
The man was treated by paramedics at the scene and then airlifted to an area hospital. Morrow did not know how many times the man had been shot.
"At this time, we don't have a reason or cause for what has taken place," he said.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation.
Traffic in the immediate area was blocked as police searched for evidence. As many as 50 officers, plus police dog units and a chopper were on the scene.
