An estimated 600 runners at Sunday's Sun Run wore T-shirts in memory of Wendy Ladner-Beaudry, who was killed in a park near UBC on April 3. (CBC)Vancouver's annual Sun Run drew more than 55,000 people Sunday morning, and while there were many official teams, one paid silent tribute to a jogger slain in a park near UBC.
Among the throng of runners was former Vancouver mayoral candidate Peter Ladner, who wore a white T-shirt with a photo of his sister and a simple line of text: "For Wendy Ladner-Beaudry."
Ladner-Beaudry was slain while jogging in Pacific Spirit Park near UBC on April 3.
Ladner said he was simply happy to make it over the finish line, rather than wondering how many minutes it would take him to cover 10 kilometres.
"I haven't been training — grief takes a lot out of you," he said. "I was happy to be under 40 [minutes].
More important, he said, was the idea of supporting his late sister's love of sport and her work in promoting athletics in the community.
"She would not have wanted us to be talking about her, that's not her at all," Ladner said. "But she would have wanted us to be here and doing it. There's a lot of people doing it today who wouldn't otherwise be doing it. That's what she would like."
An estimated 600 family members and friends of Ladner-Beaudry wore the T-shirts with her image.
No arrests have been in Ladner-Beaudry's death, and no suspects have been identified.
Police, who have interviewed hundreds of potential witnesses in the neighbourhood, said last week they were still trying to determine whether her killing was a random or targeted attack.
The winners of yesterday's 10-kilometre race were Willy Kimosop, 22, a student at Lethbridge College in Alberta, in the men's division, and Ethiopian teenager Abebu Gelan in the women's section.
