A man died in Richmond on Wednesday evening after being assaulted inside a residence, police said.

The BC Ambulance Service was called to the scene around 5:30 p.m. PT and arrived to find the man in "severe medical distress."

Despite several hours spent at the scene trying to revive the man, who was in his 20s, the attempt was unsuccessful.

Police were there investigating Wednesday night. They said the man died inside the home — in the 6300-block of Swift Avenue, near No. 2 Road — after being attacked with a weapon.

It is unclear whether the man was the target of a planned attack, police said, but they believe the killing was not gang-related.

Police would not disclose the weapon used to assault the man.

Several people who were present in the home were taken to the Richmond RCMP detachment for questioning.
