Meanwhile, police are investigating separate shootings in Vancouver and suburban Surrey.
The Burnaby shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. in an apartment building in the 2300 block of Madison Avenue, RCMP officers on the scene told CBC News.
At least four RCMP vehicles and two ambulances were sent to the scene.

Meanwhile, a man showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds Tuesday night in Surrey, RCMP Staff Sgt. Geoff Shaw told CBC News.
The man in his 20s was in stable condition, Shaw said.
Surrey RCMP received numerous 911 calls, reporting shots fired shortly after 8 p.m., Shaw said. It happened on 68th Avenue near 130th Street.
Shaw said investigators were still trying to find out the circumstances surrounding this shooting, although they believed the shooting did not take place in a residence.
There were also reports of shots fired on E 3rd Avenue near Kaslo Street in Vancouver, and one man was believed to be wounded.
Police cordoned off a large section of the area but were not immediately available to provide more details.
