Victoria police are investigating after a professional wrestling star got into an altercation with fans following an event on Saturday in Victoria.

In a video of Saturday's incident posted on YouTube, TMZ.com and other websites, World Wrestling Entertainment star and champion Chris Jericho appears to strike a female fan.

In a statement, the WWE said Jericho's car was attacked by a mob as he left the event at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre and that as he exited the vehicle to ask the crowd to clear a path, a man and woman physically and verbally assaulted him.

Victoria Police Sgt. Grant Hamilton said a man and woman were taken into custody, questioned and released. The man was not Jericho, police said.

Police have been in contact with WWE officials and they are co-operating with the investigation, but it was too early to determine whether charges would be laid, he said.
