A man who was badly burned when his East Vancouver apartment was rocked by an explosion last October has died from his injuries.

Andrew Gawley, 21, suffered second- and third-degree burns in the explosion, which police allege was deliberately set with gasoline by the former boyfriend of his new roommate.

A few weeks earlier, Gawley had rented a room in his apartment on 3400 block of Crowley Street near the Joyce SkyTrain Station to Lana Marie Christophersen, 26, originally from Alberta.

Christophersen died in the fire and explosion, and her former boyfriend, Jamie Michael Cliff, 34, was later charged with murder and attempted murder.

Police did not identify Gawley at the time, but said that an innocent 21-year-old male had been injured in the explosion.

Had suffered kidney failure

Gawley spent the past three months in hospital after the explosion, and despite suffering kidney failure, seemed to be getting better, his former roommate Mike Reid told CBC News.

"He was on and off of dialysis, but apparently in the last week or so, he caught an infection, which for a burn victim, is one of the worst things that can happen," said Reid.

Gawley was able to survive for so long because he was physically strong before the incident, Reid said.

"Unfortunately, I hadn't gotten in to see him in the hospital in the last week and a half, so I didn't actually know that he had the infection, or that he was getting weaker, and I just went in to visit him. It was too late," he said.

Aspiring actor and writer

Gawley, an aspiring actor and writer, graduated from the Vancouver Film School in 2007.

"After the accident, when we were allowed back into the apartment, one of the things that we tried our best to recover was his writing, but some of it unfortunately was ruined," Reid said.

A funeral for Gawley is scheduled for Friday in Vancouver.

Jamie Michael Cliff is scheduled to appear in court next week to face unrelated assault and robbery charges.
