The waterlogged B.C. community of Chilliwack, already dealing with floods and dozens of mudslides after a deluge of rain, is bracing for more wet weather.

The City of Chilliwack, approximately 100 km east of Vancouver, and the district that governs outlying rural areas both declared states of emergency earlier in the week after heavy rain flooded homes and caused mudslides.

Much of the region was also placed under a boil-water advisory.

In Chilliwack's hard-hit Greendale area, floodwaters receded half a metre by Saturday, said Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz.

"We have good news. While there's still rain coming down, our pumps have finally caught up and they showed this morning that the water levels are actually decreasing," Gaetz said.

The pumps were working at full capacity, she said, pumping out more than 140,000 gallons of water per minute.

Flood 'devastating': Greendale resident

However, with as much as 30 millimetres of rain expected Saturday, the dropping water levels were little consolation to Frank Pauls, who has lived in Greendale for more than 50 years.

He said the flooding is the worst he's ever seen.

"It's been very devastating. We've got water everywhere. We've got water close to our barns, our houses are flooded," Pauls said.

"These people have worked 'round the clock for three nights now, trying to save their livelihood, trying to save their houses…It's a crisis."

At least 25 homes have water running through their living quarters and another 50 have flooded basements.

The mayor has predicted it would take at least a month after the water recedes before some homes will be ready to live in again.

The city had building inspectors going from house to house Saturday, assessing damage.

The provincial government is preparing to provide emergency disaster assistance to affected homes.
