Former federal cabinet minister David Emerson, who decided not to run in the October federal election, has a new job.

The B.C. Liberal government has appointed Emerson as CEO and board chair of the BC Transmission Corporation, a Crown corporation that works with BC Hydro to supply electricity across the province. He will replace chair Bob Reid and CEO Jane Peverett.

Emerson was once deputy finance minister for B.C. and headed forestry giant Canfor and natural gas distributor Terasen. He also served on numerous corporate boards.

He then entered politics as a federal cabinet minister for Paul Martin after winning the riding of Vancouver Kingsway in 2004.

But many in Vancouver will always remember him for walking away from the Liberal party after he was re-elected in 2006, and crossing the floor to join Stephen Harper's new Conservative cabinet, a move that led to widespread calls for his resignation.
