Vancouver's outgoing mayor is speaking publicly about his party's crushing defeat, saying he could have done better than the man his party chose to replace him.

Mayor Sam Sullivan did not run in the election, but he still believes his party would have done better had he been at the helm.

"I was very confident of winning, and if not winning, then losing with a large number of NPA councillors and park and school board elected."

Sullivan did not run for re-election, after being pushed out by Coun. Peter Ladner, who won the party's nomination for mayor in a bitter leadership struggle that split the party.

Under Ladner, the Non-Partisan Association was nearly decimated in the Nov. 15 civic election, reduced from six to one seat on council. It also lost control of the park and school boards.

While Sullivan's successor, Gregor Robertson, doesn't take over until next month, Sullivan said he will be clearing out his desk on Friday.
