Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright have both been elected to serve third terms.
Corrigan was elected to city council in 1987 where he served as a councillor for 15 years.
He was elected mayor in 2002 and re-elected in 2005.
Corrigan said Saturday his city is somewhat insulated from the economic woes of many cities because of the industries it houses, and he's hopeful the high-tech and movie industries will continue to do well.
"But on the other hand, we're going to have to be very careful with the taxpayers' dollar," Corrigan said. "We're going to have to ensure that our operating expenses remain among the lowest in the Metro [Vancouver] area and, since we have no debt and we have significant cash reserves, I'm looking at this as being potentially a great time for us to do some building in Burnaby."
Corrigan said Burnaby has put some big projects on hold until the Olympics are over and he thinks the city will stimulate the economy.
Elected to Burnaby city council are Pietro Calendino, Dan N. Johnston, Sav Dhaliwal, Colleen Jordan, Nick Volkow, Richard Chang, Paul McDonell and Anne Kang.
School trustees are Ron Burton, Diana Mumford, Larry Hayes, Tony Coccia, Gary Wong, Baljinder Narang and James Wang.
Wright was elected as mayor of New Westminster in 2002 and re-elected in 2005.
City councillors are Jonathan X. Coté, Lorrie Williams, Betty McIntosh, Bill Harper, Bob Osterman and Jaimie McEvoy.
School trustees are Casey Cook, Lori Watt, Lisa Graham, Jim Goring, Michael Ewen, James Janzen and Brent Atkinson.
