The website www.iownadogandvote.com aims to mobilize the vote of Vancouver dog owners in the coming city election. (www.iownadogandvote.com)One day before a civic election, a Vancouver dog owner says there's a new breed of voter this year.
Lindsay Wilkinson has set up a website for dog owners that highlights the position of Parks Board candidates regarding off-leash parks.
The outspoken pet owner says there are lots of voters who want to elect a more dog-friendly Vancouver Park Board.
"There are people who choose to have dogs rather than children, and the dog population is as high as the children population in the city and it's growing every day," said Wilkinson.
Vancouver dog owners are fed up with having to drive or walk long distances to get to the nearest off-leash park and they want to see more fenced-off areas in parks for dogs, she said.
"There's no reason why we can't have closer parks with even a portion that would be fenced and a safe area for our dogs to be off leash," she said.
The website lists the responses of 11 of the 18 candidates for the Park Board to a request for their position off leash parks in Vancouver.
Voters across Vancouver and B.C. head to the polls Saturday to elect their new municipal governments, but only Vancouver elects a park board. Results will be posted live on the website CBC.ca/bc.
