Police are searching for a motive after someone left an explosive package outside a townhouse in a Vancouver suburb, sending a 39-year-old man to hospital.

RCMP said the man found the package at the front of his home in Langley, southeast of Vancouver, on Saturday morning.

He took the package inside, where it exploded.

The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but police didn't release more details about his condition.

Surrounding residences were evacuated for about two hours as a precaution, because it wasn't known whether there could be more explosives in the area.
