Dosanjh retains Vancouver South seat after recount

(CBC) Liberal incumbent and former B.C. premier Ujjal Dosanjh has retained his Vancouver South seat after a judicial recount Friday showed he had won — albeit with a shrunken margin of 22 votes instead of 33.
Dosanjh said Friday he was humbled by the slim victory and had not ruled out a run for the party leadership to replace Stéphane Dion.
He said he has some work to do with his constituents, who gave him a margin of victory in the 2006 election of more than 9,000 votes.
Friday's recount result was confirmed by regional Elections Canada official Donna Ceele.
Tory candidate Wai Young said she was disappointed because Associate Chief Justice Partrick Dohm, who was in charge of the recount, elected not to open all the ballot boxes.
A judicial recount is automatic in races where there is a small margin between victor and loser, according to election laws.
When the votes were counted on election night, Dosanjh had 16,101 votes to Young's 16,068, with 259 ballots rejected.
Recount ordered for Vancouver Island riding
The B.C. Supreme Court also has ordered a judicial recount of the federal election results in a key Vancouver Island riding.
Incumbent Liberal Keith Martin held onto his seat by only 68 votes over Conservative lawyer Troy DeSouza in the Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca riding following last week's federal election.
That recount is scheduled for Monday morning at a Victoria hotel.
