Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuiness said using a Taser on a young mother was the last thing officers wanted to do. (CBC) Vancouver police are adopting a new policy to disclose any uses of Taser weapons following yet another incident Friday in which a man was jolted by one of the weapons, this time at a hospital.
Police were called to Vancouver General Hospital around 11:30 a.m. because a man was threatening to hurt himself, Const. Jana McGuinness said Friday afternoon.
The unidentified man, 39, was unlawfully at large and wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breach of parole, she said.
Two officers who were already at the hospital on an unrelated call and a third officer who arrived on scene attempted to arrest the man, McGuinness said.
Police say the man became violent and was screaming at officers to shoot him.
"He attempted to kill himself by pulling an electrical cord out of the wall and sticking it in a cup of liquid he was holding," McGuinness said in a news release.
"When nothing happened, he threw the cup aside and attempted to flip over the heavy hospital bed. The officers tried to calm him down, but he only became more enraged."
The man continued to struggle after being tackled by the officers.
"One of the officers used the Taser in touch mode twice on his lower back. He was handcuffed and then taken to jail following a medical assessment," McGuinness said.
Vancouver police were under fire last month after an officer shocked a teenage mother they described as mentally disturbed with a Taser. Police said the Taser was used in order to save the life of her critically ill infant, whom she was holding at the time.
The 16-year-old and her child had recently been reported missing from a foster home, and police said using the stun gun on her was the last thing officers wanted to do.
McGuinness said on Friday the Vancouver Police Department is launching a new policy in which it will list any uses of the Taser on its website.
