An explosion in the kitchen of La Bocca Restaurant and Bar in Whistler, B.C., triggered a small fire. (CBC) Three kitchen staff members were injured Monday afternoon in an explosion and fire at an upscale restaurant in Whistler, B.C., fire officials said.
The explosion, which triggered a small fire, occurred in the kitchen of La Bocca Restaurant and Bar, located in the Whistler Village Square, shortly after 2 p.m. PT.
One person suffered burns and a concussion from the blast, while two others had less serious burn injuries, Whistler fire chief Rob Whitton told CBC News.
Whistler fire chief Rob Whitton says the explosion inside the kitchen of La Bocca Restaurant and Bar appeared accidental. (CBC) Fire crews and members of the B.C. Ambulance Service attended the scene. The explosion did not cause any damage outside the restaurant, Whitton said.
Fire crews shut down the gas of the building. Gas inspectors were trying to determine the cause, although "it appeared accidental," the fire chief said.
"Right now, [the cause is] not determined. It could be a combination of steam and a possible gas leak," Whitton said. "We've closed the kitchen off completely from the rest of the restaurant."
A small section of the Village Square was blocked off but has since reopened.
