A massive blaze burned down a condominium building under construction and caused extensive damage to another at a real estate development site in Surrey, B.C., on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire broke out at one of the Quattro condo buildings at 138th Street and 107A Avenue around 4 p.m. PT, said Gord Anderson, deputy fire chief of the Surrey Fire Department.

There were workers at the construction site but every one got out and no one was injured, he said.

Eleven fire crews were deployed to battle the fire and members of the B.C. Ambulance Service were on standby throughout the afternoon.

The fire prompted the evacuation of some nearby residences and a power outage that affected more than 4,000 BC Hydro customers. The affected households can expect to have power back between midnight and 2 a.m., according to BC Hydro's website.

Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, Anderson said.

Some small structures across the street also caught fire, but crews were quick to put them out, he said.

There were fears a crane alongside the development would topple, so experts were brought in for advice.

"We got some experts coming in to give us guidance on the stability of the crane, if it should be taken down or people [should] just keep away from it due to the level of risk," Anderson said.

Fire crews were busy Wednesday night, putting out hot spots and clearing a mountain of ashes, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Anderson said it's the second fire at the Quattro construction site this week.

"Two or three days ago, [there was] a small suspicious fire in the same building," he said.

It's too early to say if there is a connection between the two fires, Anderson said.

"What I've seen is a whole bunch of black smoke about a block and a half away from us, and there was fire underneath it," he told CBC News.

"From what I understand, there was something underneath a crane that caught fire and it's pretty extensive. Flames are coming up over the roof."

Traffic was still being rerouted Wednesday night at 104th Street and East Whalley Ring Road.

Quattro is the largest residential and commercial development in Surrey. The $625-million project comprises 1,150 units spread over four hectares. The buildings were to open later in the fall.

Earlier this year, buyers lined up for a chance to snap up the condos. More than 100 units sold out in four hours at prices ranging from $140,000 to $500,000.
