Will school be cancelled during the Olympics? That's the question the Vancouver School Board is considering this week.
Ken Denike, a school board trustee and liaison for the 2010 Games, said transportation issues might mean schools have to stay closed.
"A large number of our teachers commute in from the suburbs, and from what we're hearing about the transportation situation, it could be very difficult for them to get there, and you can't have the school open if you don't have teachers," Denike told CBC Radio on Monday morning.
Denike said he understands daycare could be an issue for many families if schools close, but the board would try to help find a solution.
The 2010 Winter Olympic Games will be held in Vancouver, Richmond, West Vancouver and Whistler from Feb. 12 to 28.
The board will also consider other options, including closing some schools or keeping schools open and then starting March break early.
School boards in West Vancouver and Squamish have already decided to close schools for two weeks during the Olympics, and Whistler is also planning to close some schools.
The Richmond school board voted this summer to have spring break from March 22 to 26 in 2010.
