Province kicks in $10,000 for Victoria's 'Con Air' program

B.C. Solicitor General John van Dongen says money from the civil forfeiture program will be used to the so-called con air program in Victoria. (CBC)The B.C. government is using $10,000 seized from criminals to boost the Victoria Police Department's so-called Con Air program.
The program, also running in Vancouver, allows police to transport accused suspects by plane back to their home province to face outstanding warrants. It was initially set up with funds donated by the local business communities.
B.C. Solicitor General John van Dongen said the new funds come from the civil forfeiture program, which allows the government to seize assets used in the commission of crimes, or those received as proceeds of crimes.
Van Dongen said the program is an effective way to keep B.C. streets safe. Vancouver police have flown 19 people out of province, while police in Victoria have removed eight.
