The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people not to eat certain sandwiches from a wholesaler in Surrey, B.C., because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes from deli meat under a national recall of Maple Leaf meat products.

King Bean Wholesalers is recalling its roast beef subs and kaisers sold in stores in Surrey, New Westminster and Langley, the CFIA said Saturday.

There have been no reports of consumers becoming ill after eating these sandwiches, it said.

Listeriosis has been the cause or a contributing factor in 11 deaths in B.C., Ontario, and Alberta, since news of the outbreak emerged two weeks ago, the Public Health Agency of Canada said Sunday.

A total of 33 cases across the country have been conclusively linked to the outbreak while an additional 25 suspected cases are under investigation.

Food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled and consuming products contaminated with the bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness.

Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, senior citizens and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
