Police shot and killed a huge black bear that had broken into a basement suite in Coquitlam, B.C., Thursday morning, RCMP said.

It was the second bear sighting in the suburban Vancouver community in the past two days. On Wednesday morning, officers killed another bear that had mauled a Coquitlam woman in her yard in the Westwood Plateau area.

Coquitlam RCMP responded to a 911 call of a bear sighting in the 2200 block of Turnberry Lane around 8:30 a.m. PT Thursday, spokesman Cpl. Tony Farahbakhchian said .

No one was injured in the latest bear incident.

When officers arrived at a home, they found a large black bear, which appeared to be about 400 pounds, eating some food inside the basement suite, police said.

Officers were able to chase the animal, which acted aggressively, out of the house.

Police decided to shoot the bear because they were unable to control it. It was hit in the shoulder with a bullet and ran up a tree, police said.

Conservation officers then shot the bear with a tranquillizer. It fell from the tree and started charging towards officers. Police eventually shot it again and killed it.

On Wednesday morning, a Coquitlam woman needed surgery to repair damage to her head, torso and arms after she was mauled by a bear in her yard.

The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to hospital, where she's believed to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. An RCMP officer shot the animal in a nearby yard.
