If you think you're seeing more pesky insects this summer in Metro Vancouver, you're not imagining things, a pest controller says.

The insect world is enjoying a banner year, says John Mitten, branch manager for Poulin's Pest Control in Burnaby, and he's seeing an increase in wasps, ants and moths.

One cause was the wet weather in June that delayed the insect hatching process, Mitten said Thursday, adding that meant that as "we've moved into July and August and with the warm weather over the last period, everything is hatching and breeding out."

And as long as the warm weather continues, Mitten said, we shouldn't expect any relief: "If this is sustained, we can expect wasps, ants, moths and all of these summer pests that we see more prolific now, to be way more [so], possibly into September and October."

This year has also brought more sightings of another pest that's normally found in much warmer climates: termites. And that's bad news for B.C.'s numerous wood-frame buildings, Mitten said.
