A bus passenger displayed what police described as erratic behaviour on this Newton bus loop in Surrey, B.C., on Friday evening. (CBC) A young man who struggled with transit security guards on Friday evening has died in a Surrey, B.C., hospital.
The unidentified man was taken to Surrey Memorial Hospital after going into "medical distress," Surrey RCMP Sgt. Roger Morrow said Tuesday.
The man police said was in his 20s was on a bus departing the Newton bus loop at 72nd Avenue near King George Highway around 6 p.m., Morrow said.
The bus driver noticed the man's "erratic behaviour" and requested help from Coast Mountain Bus Service security guards.
A struggle ensued shortly after two security guards boarded the bus, forcing the vehicle to stop on 72nd Avenue, west of 134th Street, Morrow said.
Surrey RCMP Sgt. Roger Morrow says the man was aggressive and combative to transit security personnel. (CBC) "The subject became physically aggressive to security personnel and combative and very resistant," he said.
"RCMP were then called to the scene … we were at some point able to take this person into custody."
The man was listed in critical condition in hospital and died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday.
"How things unfolded with the two security personnel as well as once the RCMP officers arrived on the scene, frankly, we're not sure yet," Morrow said.
RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation and the B.C. coroner's service will conduct an autopsy to try to determine the cause of death.
Another man died after Surrey arrest
This is the second time in two weeks that a person has died after being arrested by Surrey RCMP.
David James Stitt, 46, died in hospital on June 20, two days after he was arrested by RCMP officers in south Surrey.
Stitt was waving a stick in the 13500 block of Crescent Road when a female RCMP officer answered a call about a disturbance, police said at the time.
The officer used a baton and pepper-sprayed Stitt while attempting to subdue the agitated man, police said.
That investigation is ongoing, Morrow said Tuesday.
