Prince George police say a woman who died in a police cell on Thursday took her own life.

Staff Sgt. Tom Bethune said the woman tied a string around her neck while in the drunk tank.

A coroner's inquest will be conducted, since it is mandatory procedure in B.C. following an in-custody death.

The woman was never out of video surveillance and everything is on tape, said Bethune.

The woman was taken into custody after officers found her in the bushes with a half-naked man near College Heights Neighbourhood Pub just before 1 a.m.

The two were arrested for being intoxicated in public and placed in holding cells, according to an RCMP news release.

The woman, whose name has not been made public, was found unresponsive in her cell during a routine check a few hours later, said RCMP Const. Annie Linteau on Thursday.

It is not known how long the woman was unresponsive in her cell, but Linteau said it is RCMP policy to check on prisoners every 15 minutes.
