A young man reported missing from White Rock, B.C., has apparently caught an international flight out of Canada and is "believed to be safe," RCMP said Thursday.

Police are working with Interpol and reviewing the surveillance tapes from Vancouver International Airport to confirm Daniel Bouchard, 20, bought himself a ticket and checked through customs using his photo identification, said White Rock RCMP Const. Janelle Canning.

"It appears that he was travelling with some items that would indicate that he's decided to take a vacation,” said Canning. “For that reason, we believe he made the decision of his own accord, and he should be safe. However, we are confirming that with some international agencies.”

Bouchard went missing on June 9 on the way back to his White Rock basement suite from a local pub. His roommate found the jacket he wore to the pub in the home, but there has been no sign of Bouchard.

"Members of the investigative team are now confident that Mr. Bouchard has travelled outside Canada, but the reason for his travel [is] still under investigation," White Rock RCMP Cpl. Cate Dickman said in a news release Thursday.

"At this point in time, Mr. Bouchard is believed to be safe, but assistance has been requested from international investigators in confirming his well-being."

There are no reports that any one has actually spoken to Bouchard yet, and his parents have said it's completely out of character for him to take off without a reason and miss work.

Daniel's dad, Dan Bouchard Sr., said the family has been frantically searching the Lower Mainland daily and asking for information on the Internet since his son’s uncharacteristic disappearance.

“I guess the biggest question is, has he gotten himself involved in something? He just wouldn’t on a whim decide to go on a holiday … unless there was a reason for him to leave the country that we don’t know about,” said Bouchard.

This latest reported missing case prompted concerns over an increasing number of young men in Metro Vancouver who have gone missing.

Five men between the age of 18 and 32 have disappeared since June of last year:

  • April 10 — Michael Scullion, 30, of Chilliwack disappeared in Agassiz.
  • March 19 — Kellen McElwee, 25, of Burnaby was last seen outside a Langley restaurant.
  • Jan. 1 — Derek Kelly, 32, of Langley vanished near Bridge Lake.
  • Nov. 2, 2007 — John Kahler, 29, was last seen at a four-by-four truck rally at Stave Lake.
  • June 1 — Bryan Braumberger, 18, disappeared somewhere near the Coquitlam-New Westminster boundary.

Police have not drawn any link in these five missing cases but John Kahler's sister, Lori, have said they bear striking similarities because the men all were relatively young, athletic and good looking.
