Campers at the Sunnyside Campground in Cultus Lake, B.C., on Sunday found themselves amid a police investigation into the death of a young man. (CBC) A 19-year-old man died and two others were stabbed in a fight between two groups of men that broke out at a family campground in Cultus Lake, B.C., on Saturday night.
The Richmond man died upon arrival at hospital, while the two other men's injuries are not life-threatening, RCMP said Sunday.
Chilliwack RCMP were called to the Sunnyside Campground at Cultus Lake — about 100 kilometres east of Vancouver — at 11:10 p.m. due to a disturbance involving two groups.
Forensic investigators comb the crime scene on Sunday where three people were stabbed during an altercation late Saturday night. (CBC) When officers arrived at the scene, they found three men with stab wounds, Cpl. Dale Carr said, while the assailants had fled on foot.
"One of those victims is a park employee. He received a non-life-threatening injury. He was attempting to intervene in the altercation when he was hurt," Carr said.
"The second victim is a 20-year-old male. He is in serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He's been taken to a Metro Vancouver hospital."
A police canine unit was deployed and later tracked three suspects. The three men were in police custody in Chilliwack on Sunday with charges pending, Carr said.
Some witnesses said the altercation might have been the result of a fight over a woman.
Carr said the RCMP do not know whether all of the parties were acquainted with each other or what the motivation behind the stabbing was.
Police are not releasing the name of the deceased man until next of kin can be notified.
