The Vancouver School Board voted to keep the Garibaldi Annex School in East Vancouver open Monday night. (CBC)A group of parents and students has stopped the Vancouver School Board from shutting down an East Vancouver elementary school.
The Garibaldi Annex School near Nanaimo and East Hastings streets was expected to be closed because of dwindling enrolment.
But on Monday night the board voted to accept a plan put forward by parents that will see the school develop a program focused on the arts and culture.
As part of the deal, the board said the school, which currently has only 41 students, will have to attract 36 more students by the start of the 2010 school year, or face closure once again.
Katherine Mulligan and other members of Garibaldi Working Group, which fought to keep the school open, were overjoyed by the decision.
"I'm so happy right now. It's been seven months and tonight our voices were heard," said Mulligan.
Members of the group now plan to work with the board to implement aspects of the plan, which could include the establishment of an early learning program.
