A well-known produce company from Metro Vancouver is changing a controversial policy and will no longer put its brand label on tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables grown in Mexico.
Starting next winter, produce imported from Mexico by BC Hot House will be labelled MX Hot House.
Maureen Sheehan, the director of marketing for BC Hot House, said it's too expensive to grow enough produce in British Columbia over the winter, so for several years, BC Hot House has been importing from Mexico.
Two years ago, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency told BC Hot House to place the Product of Mexico label in a more prominent location.
Sheehan told CBC News on Wednesday that customers have told the company the origin label isn't enough.
"People in B.C. care about food, and they also care about the product and want to know where it is from. And we want to support our local growers, and make sure that the people understand what they are buying. So we want to be as clear as possible. That's why we are changing the brand," said Sheehan.
