Parts of British Columbia can expect winter-like conditions this weekend, with snow forecast for the Lower Mainland and the Southern Interior.

Although it seems unusual, snow in April isn't totally unusual according to CBC News Senior Meteorologist Claire Martin.

"On average in April, we do see half a centimetre of snow in the Lower Mainland. It's not completely unheard of — it's just not what we want to hear."

Looking ahead to the weekend, Martin was not optimistic.

"It's looking like Mother Nature doesn't know it's summer yet — or even spring," she said. "It's horrible. There's a good chance we will see sleety snow showers even in the lower mainland."

Blueberry farmers in the Fraser Valley said they're hoping the cold spell doesn't last long enough to affect this year's crops.

"The plants can only take a certain amount of frost while they're at the tender bud stage," said Will Van Baalen, executive director of the B.C. Blueberry Council in Abbotsford.

"The crop is about two weeks behind normal schedule, and the tighter the bud stage the more frost they can take," he said. "If they were in open bloom right now, we'd be in severe trouble."
