Nickelback singer convicted of drunk driving in B.C.

Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger was convicted of drunk driving in a B.C. court Tuesday and could face a fine or a temporary driving ban.

Kroeger, 33, whose real name is Chad Turton, plans to appeal the conviction, his lawyer Marvin Stern said outside Surrey Provincial Court.

The Canadian rock star was caught driving a Lamborghini in Surrey in June 2006 while his blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit.

His lawyer had argued that police violated his client's rights and wanted breathalyzer results thrown out of court.

But the judge ruled that those results were admissible.

"The judge found that his Charter of Rights were breached. However, he declined to exclude the breathalyzer results," Stern said.

Kroeger, who's currently working in Europe, did not appear in court Tuesday because he wanted to avoid a media circus, Stern said.

He will be sentenced May 1, and could face a fine or a temporary driving ban.

Nickelback's members are originally from Hanna, Alta., but moved to Vancouver in the 1990s to launch their careers.

The Juno Award-winning band has had a series of chart-toppers, beginning in 2001 with How You Remind Me.
