Previous charges against the suspect, whom police describe as a 38-year-old Langley man, include speeding and running red lights.

Police think the man was driving a white Ford F-250 pickup believed to have been involved in a fatal hit and run around 2 a.m. PT Thursday, said RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr of the integrated homicide team.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was held overnight by police for questioning before being released on Friday without any charges being laid.

B.C. provincial court records say the suspect had been convicted four times for traffic violations — three times for speeding and once for running a red light. The other charges against him were dropped or dismissed.

These details emerged after an incident that began early Thursday when a Chevrolet Silverado tried to pass the Ford on a rural stretch of 16 Avenue near 264 Street about 2 a.m. PT.

Eventually, the Silverado was forced off the road by the Ford F-250, police told CBC News. The driver of the Ford drove away, while the three young men in the Chevy got out of their truck to deal with the aftermath.

Police allege that sometime later, the driver of the Ford pickup returned and drove straight at the three young men.

Two of the men, Sam Dooley and Luke Stevens, both 21, were able to get out of the way. Silas O'Brien was unable to jump clear and was struck and killed by the truck.

"At this point, investigators are confident that the vehicle involved in this incident is indeed in our custody and do not require any further tips regarding the white Ford F-250," said Carr.
