A man was charged Monday in connection with a shooting incident in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside Friday which claimed the life of a motorist who was sitting in his van at the 300 block of Carrall Street.

Police describe the incident as the city's sixth homicide this year.

Charged with first-degree murder is Matthew Ryan Wall, who was arrested at about 8 p.m. Friday in a rooming house, Vancouver police said.

On Friday evening, a witness told CBC News that he saw a man approach the van, then "boom boom."

The witness told police that before pulling the trigger, the shooter said, "The war is on."
