Commission to investigate RCMP in fatal Vernon shooting

The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP has launched a probe into the conduct of the Vernon RCMP officers involved in the Dec. 27 shooting death of Christopher Klim.
The 24-year-old Vernon man was being taken into custody under the Mental Health Act when he brandished a knife, refused commands to drop it and began advancing toward the officers.
In filing the complaint, commission chairman Paul Kennedy said he is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting death.
The commission will also examine whether members complied with all guidelines and statutory requirements relating to arrests under the Mental Health Act.
Kennedy said RCMP national, regional and detachment-level policies relating to persons in a state of mental health crisis will also be reviewed to ensure they are adequate.
