British Columbia RCMP have charged a 29-year-old man with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of two sex-trade workers in the Fraser Valley.

Davey Mato Butorac was arrested over the weekend and charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Gwendolyn Jo Lawton and Sheryl Lynn Korrol, whose bodies were found last year at different times in Abbotsford and Langley, respectively.

Butorac is expected to make a court appearance later Monday.

At a morning news conference, Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said the evidence pointed to "what we considered possibly a serial killer."

Carr said investigators have been working with the RCMP-Vancouver police's Joint Missing Women Task Force to identify similar cases that may be also linked to the case.

The body of Lawton, 46, was found by city employees in the Pemberton Hill area of Abbotsford on March 13.

The body of Korrol, 50, was found on July 7 in a business district of Langley by some business employees. 

As part of the investigation into Korrol's death, police obtained a search warrant on Oct. 18 and seized a vehicle connected with Butorac, an Aldergrove resident who lived with his father in a townhouse.

But in an unexpected twist, on Dec. 18, police allege, lab tests indicated DNA evidence linked to Lawton was found in the vehicle.

Concerned for the public safety, Carr said police began round-the-clock surveillance of Butorac, while gathering more evidence.

On Dec. 29, police arrested Butorac, but he was released 24 hours later due to lack of evidence.

He was arrested again on Friday, after police obtained new evidence. The Crown then approved the two second-degree murder charges and an arrest warrant was issued.
