Jewish people are the most culturally-concentrated group in Metro Vancouver according to a new study looking at where cultural groups settle.
The study, called Multiculturalism on the Ground, was commissioned by Heritage Canada to project future cultural demographics in the country.
It broke down the most culturally-concentrated groups based on where they live in Metro Vancouver and in other major Canadian cities.
In Metro Vancouver, the Jewish community lives in a tight cluster along Oak Street on Vancouver's west side, according to one of the authors of the study, Dan Hiebert, and there is a simple reason why.
"There's a strong cultural phenomenon going on there, especially with Orthodox Jewish people, who want to be close to their synagogue," Hiebert told CBC News on Thursday morning.
The second most concentrated group is the large Iranian community that settled on the North Shore.
But the study also found that the largest minority group in Metro Vancouver is not the group with the highest concentration.
The Chinese community is fourth on the list, despite its large size, and Hiebert said he was not surprised.
"When you have that many people, you're not going to have them all concentrating in one area," Hiebert said. "You couldn't possibly fit them all into one neighbourhood."
