An investigation is underway in Victoria, B.C. as police try to determine if a crash in front of a homeless shelter that injured two people Sunday night was an accident or deliberately planned.
Victoria police said on Monday an impaired driver swerved across the sidewalk in front of the Our Place shelter in the downtown area at around 10 p.m., running over a man and woman sleeping on the sidewalk.
Both were hurt but the man, who's in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and broken bones after being pinned against the wall of the shelter until the driver reversed his vehicle and fled.
Police said there may have been some sort of altercation between the driver and several people at the shelter before the incident.
Officers recognized the 47-year-old driver and found a suspect passed out near his vehicle close to his home.
The driver is in custody and is scheduled to appear in a Victoria court Monday on charges that are expected to include dangerous driving, impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
