Police arrested a young man they believe was involved in an apparent altercation before a 52-year-old man was struck by a vehicle in Langley, B.C., and later died in hospital.

The 18-year-old remains in custody Tuesday evening while investigators try to establish the nature of the altercation, said Cpl. Dale Carr, a spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Police said they believe the older man had been involved in a fight before ending up in the 20500 block of 56 Avenue where he was hit at around 10 p.m. Monday, Carr said.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday afternoon but the identity of the man is not being released.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision is not associated to the altercation and that the collision itself was a tragic accident.

"What we're trying to determine is whether or not the [deceased's] injuries were as a result of the altercation or the car accident," Carr said Tuesday before the arrest was made.

Police were looking for three people, and at least two are believed to be young adult males, Carr said.
 
"Whether or not the individual was attacked … or whether or not he was himself a suspect in committing a robbery and then there was a reverse attack on him — those are all things that our homicide unit is trying to establish," he said.

Plainclothes officers were canvassing local businesses on 56 Avenue Tuesday.

"I just see him [the deceased man] on all fours in the middle of the street as we're driving toward the casino over there and he got hit by a car and three kids ran away after he got hit," Shawn Ranger, who witnessed the car crash, said Monday night.
