Vancouver police responded to a call about an impaired driver just before 4 p.m. local time at the Shell gas station at East 41st Avenue and Knight Street, Const. Tim Fanning told CBC News.

Officers arrived and confronted a man in his early 20s who pulled out a handgun, Fanning said. The man appeared to be changing a tire when one of the officers approached.

"Gunfire was exchanged and the man was shot. It was fatal. Our officers weren't hurt," Fanning said.

The injured man was taken to hospital where he died a short time later, while the officer who returned fire was a veteran with the force with at least 15 years experience, Fanning said.

At least 10 police patrol cars were on scene and investigators from the Vancouver Police Department's major crime section were on scene Monday night.

The identity of the dead man has not been released, as police have not notified his next of kin, Fanning said.

Cleo Harman said she watched the gunfight unfold from across the street behind bulletproof glass at the Money Mart where she works.

"I heard four shots. It sounded just like a 'pop,' like a balloon going, like a balloon exploding," she told CBC News Monday evening.

Witnesses, including a cameraman from Channel M, a local multicultural TV station, were ushered onto a transit bus that was driven away from the scene.

The cameraman happened to be around the area and arrived at the gas station minutes after the shooting took place, Fanning said.

He didn't film the gunfight between the man and police but captured what happened afterwards, Fanning said.

Police reviewed the tape before returning it to the cameraman, Fanning said.
