A 26-year-old Vancouver man died in police custody after police in East Vancouver stopped him at a traffic check at 1 a.m. PT Friday morning.

Police said two officers arrested the man after finding what they believed to be cocaine on him. He was placed in a holding cell at 2:30 a.m.

An hour and a half later, jail staff found the man unresponsive. Emergency workers came within minutes and declared him dead.

Const. Howard Chow said Friday morning that police don't know the reason for the death.

"There was minimal force used and all indications are that there was no physical altercation at the scene," said Chow.

Homicide investigators are looking into the case, as is the coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

"There was no indication that anything but minimal force was used simply to put the handcuffs on and escort him on to the wagon and he was transported to the jail," said Chow

Police have not released the identity of the man, but said he is known to them.
