A six-metre-wide mudslide caused by heavy snow and rainfall over the weekend forced the closure of the recently reopened Stanley Park seawall on Monday.

The section of the seawall between Third Beach and the Lions Gate Bridge will be closed for at least a few days, Vancouver Park Board officials said.

Park Board officials are consulting an engineering contractor about the problem and remedial work is expected to take a few days.

The Stanley Park seawall reopened on Nov. 16. It was closed for almost a year after it was damaged by a major windstorm last December.

The December 2006 storm devastated the 8.8-kilometre iconic walkway, knocking down more than 10,000 trees and destabilizing the cliffs above the walkway.

The walkway will close for further repairs over several weeks in spring and early summer, when lower daytime tides allow better access to the seawall.

Post-storm repair costs for the largest city-owned park in Canada were estimated at $9 million.

It is not known if the latest damage to the seawall will delay future work on the walkway.
