A man was hit as he drove his black Chevy Silverado pickup in the intersection of Mariner Way and Lighthouse Crescent, said Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk.

"Even though it's [a] preliminary [investigation], we have information that we believe that it's targeted," Gresiuk said.

Police responded to shots fired at around 12:30 p.m., in a residential area near a large school and a church, Gresiuk said.

The pickup sat idling as police arrived, with the window on the driver's side blown out.

Police won't release the man's name or say if he's known to authorities.

"People … should be concerned and angry when this type of incident happens in their neighbourhood," Gresiuk said.

"It's not about a good or bad neighbourhood. The issue is that these people are bringing this type of activity into the neighborhoods."

The shooting occurred on the same day a new joint police task force in Metro Vancouver announced its first success after one week of visibly patrolling the streets, nightclubs and other places gangsters are known to frequent.

Fifty-six officers from the Violence Suppression Team — created as a response to a spate of gang-style shootings in the Lower Mainland over the last four months — checked nearly 300 people and seized a number of guns.
