RCMP were investigating two homicides Thursday night after a man and a woman died following a house fire in Maple Ridge, B.C.

Spokesman Cpl. Dale Carr told CBC News the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the case.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene on the 12400 block of 263 Street in Maple Ridge around 4:30 p.m., when a man and a woman were found inside the second floor of a house, Carr said.

Firefighters performed CPR on one person at the scene, and the pair were then rushed to hospital in serious condition. They were suffering from smoke inhalation and were pronounced dead in hospital.

Police have not commented on the cause of the fire.
