Information used to obtain an arrest warrant for Orville Mader says he was convicted in absentia for debauchery for offences that occurred in 2004.
Mader made a brief appearance in an Abbotsford, B.C., court via video link Wednesday to confirm he has obtained a lawyer and will make a bail application Thursday.
The 54-year-old Kitchener, Ont., resident, who has a home in the Vancouver area but apparently has lived in Asia for years, is wanted in Thailand on allegations he had sex with an eight-year-old boy.
Orville Frank Mader has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

The court information also says there is evidence of sexual activity with male children under 14 in e-mails exchanged in 2003 and 2004 in Cambodia.
Mader was arrested last Friday after stepping off a flight at Vancouver International Airport and held under a protective order after a provincial court judge ruled he could present a threat to children.
