The alleged Hells Angel associate who survived a gangland-style shooting in a Vancouver suburb on Tuesday has gone into hiding, his family says.

Leonard Pelletier and his two sons have moved out of the family's heavily gated home and into a "safe house,'' Pelletier's father told CBC News on Wednesday.

In the interview, George Pelletier said the attack, which came as Leonard Pelletier was dropping off one his sons at the D.W. Poppy High School in Langley, was retaliation for an incident in which Pelletier, 40, beat up a man who had come looking for one of his sons in June.

The man responded by putting out a murder contract on Pelletier, George Pelletier said.

Police said on Tuesday Leonard Pelletier and the son who was in the SUV when the attack occurred are well-known to police, and that the incident was likely gang-related.

Pelletier escaped the hail of bullets, but was slightly injured when he lost control of his Hummer and hit a tree.
