New program to target domestic violence in Surrey

A new program aimed at curbing domestic violence in Surrey, B.C., will involve police, city officials and support for victims.
Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts introduced the new domestic violence team on Monday, during a run to raise funds to educate the public and prevent the problem.

"The RCMP took the lead on that, so now we have a dedicated unit to not only investigate the incidents, but also have support for the victims as well," Watts said at the Surrey RED FM charity event.
She said violence against women has become more serious in the city, where RCMP responded to 1,200 such reports last year.
"The issue of domestic violence requires the concerted efforts of the entire community to effect change."
The domestic violence unit will work together with the Surrey Women's Centre — which supports women, children and families affected by violence — and city officials.
