Picket lines went up Monday outside the Ikea home furnishing store in Richmond, closing the outlet in the Vancouver suburb.

Three hundred employees, members of Teamsters local 213, say they want an end to a two-tiered wage system that pays newer workers at a lower wage scale. As well, workers are seeking a wage hike and an increase in the number of full-time workers at the store.

In a news update on its website, the Teamsters Local 213 said the workers were officially on strike as of 3 a.m. Monday after the company's latest offer was rejected.

John Wilson, business representative for Local 213, said a cashier with one year's experience was paid more 20 years ago than the rate they're paid now.

"Ikea is a highly profitable company whose dedicated and hard-working workers contribute to that success," Wilson said in a news release. Those workers need and deserve fair and equal compensation for their work."

The company's flagship store in Coquitlam is not affected by the strike.
