One person is dead and at least eight people were taken to hospital Friday afternoon after a major traffic accident shut down the Stanley Park Causeway and the Lion's Gate Bridge, which connects Vancouver to the North Shore.

A West Vancouver Blue Bus and a car collided just after 4 p.m. on the Stanley Park Causeway ramp to the bridge. Another vehicle became involved in the crash moments later.

The driver of the first car was killed. The bus driver and seven passengers were taken to hospital.

Some passengers on the bus told CBC News that people who were standing were thrown to the floor upon impact.

Both the Lion's Gate Bridge and the Stanley Park Causeway had re-opened to traffic by 9:30 p.m. PT.

Police spokesman Sgt. Donald Cayer said Friday evening that the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

"Currently, we have one deceased person and several people that are seriously injured, from that car and from the bus included," he said.

"For now, we are in the middle of investigating."
