The salvage operation for a tall ship that ran aground off Saturna Island has been suspended for now.
The Robertson II, a 40-metre schooner, ran aground over the weekend, in the Gulf Islands, off the southeast coast of Vancouver Island. Witnesses say the vessel spent the last three days resting on a reef at a nearly 90 degree angle close to Winter Cove.
None of the crew was injured but the ship suffered significant damage. Crews were called in to set up fuel containment booms but salvage efforts to save the vessel have not yet been successful.
"At this time, salvage operations have been suspended but the ultimate goal is to right the vessel. To that end, underwater surveys and damage assessments of the vessel are ongoing," Coast Guard spokesman Dan Bates said.
"It is the owner's responsibility to right or remove the vessel. Coast Guard is obviously working with the owner to oversee the operation."
The 67-year-old heritage schooner served as a training vessel with the Sail and Life Training Society in Victoria for twenty years.
It was sold several years ago to a Victoria company. Its new owner could not be reached for comment.
