The embattled mayor of Port Coquitlam was set to appear in court Monday morning on charges that he assaulted a former girlfriend and her companion earlier this year.

Scott Young is also expected at a council meeting Monday night, where he will face some angry residents who want him to resign.

For now, he's only stepped aside while he deals with the charges against him.

Over the weekend long-time Port Coquitlam resident Brenda Moore organized a "resignation rally" in an effort to shame Young into permanently resigning as mayor.

"We need our mayor to be somebody that everyone can look up to," she said. "And we certainly can't have him going around to talk to schools, to do public humanitarian events, anything to do with our city."

Lil Reid-Smith was one of the people who signed a petition Saturday to oust Young, saying he's contributing to an image problem for the community.

"Everybody's very embarrassed. First we had the pig farmer, and now Scott, like, now our mayor? And everybody starts to say, 'Well, what the hell is going on in Port Coquitlam?' "

Young, 45, faces seven charges related to an incident at the home of his former girlfriend in April, including assault, criminal harassment and breaking a peace bond to stay away from her.

He spent the Easter weekend in jail following his arrest. He later held a news conference to apologize for his behaviour, saying he is battling alcoholism.

So far, he has missed three council meetings since his arrest. If he misses a fourth meeting, he will automatically be disqualified from council.

The mayor has indicated to city staff he intends to be at Monday night's meeting.
