A doctor is recovering from facial injuries after being attacked by a man inside the Prince George Hospital on Easter morning, CBC News has learned.

An assailant approached the doctor from behind while he worked on a computer in the hospital's CAT scan room, covered his head with a cloth so he couldn't see, and began punching him, according to the RCMP.

The doctor suffered a black eye, bloody nose and soft tissue damage. His wallet was also taken.

RCMP Const. Gary Godwin said he was shocked by the attack.

"I've been posted in Prince George for almost 22 years now," he told the CBC. "I don't believe that we've had medical personnel assaulted in a criminal manner. Every once in awhile they may be assaulted by someone in a psychiatric ward, but not in a criminal manner."

Police and hospital officials used security footage to search for possible suspects and an arrest was made later in the day on Sunday.

39-year old Wesley Thomas Andrews of Prince George is charged with robbery, assault and uttering threats.

An official for Northern Health said they're taking the incident "very seriously."
